Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Five Babies in a Tub

With my mother-in-law here this week, we decided to be adventurous and give the babies their first bath in the big tub. It was quite a workout getting everyone undressed, weighed, bathed and dressed again---all while trying to prevent drowning and other life-threatening activities. The babies had a blast, and in the end, so did we!

A Tribute to My Mom

Betty Ann Curtis aka "World's Greatest Mom"

Top Ten Reasons Why My Mom is the BEST!!!

10. She is super-organized. I have learned a lot from her, and being organized is the only thing that has kept me sane with all these babies!

"Mimi" with Kaydence, Kassidy, Rustin, Ryder and Kyndall

9. She is the ultimate multi-tasker

Mimi with Kassidy, Kaydence and Rustin

8. Growing up, she drove me (and my 5 other siblings) to all of our extra-curricular activities. She was our biggest cheerleader and almost never missed a performance, game, meet, etc. that any of us was in.

7. When it comes to finding bargains, my mom is amazing.

Mimi and Papa with Ryder, Kassidy, Kyndall, Kaydence and Rustin. (The outfits the babies are wearing were only $5.)

6.
She makes magnificent meals in the microwave. Until I went to college, I didn’t even know that “normal” people brown ground beef on the stove

5.
Family always came first with my mom. She made sure that we read scriptures and had prayer together as a family every day. We also had “Family Home Evening” every week.

The Curtis Family (minus Colby) in Summer 2006

4. Any moment can become a Kodak moment when my mom is around.

Our first trip to Rudy's BBQ with my mom and brother Ryan.

3. She is a good friend—she listens and gives good advice.

2. She is a terrific “Mimi” (what the grandkids call her)

Kaiya, Mimi and Riley at Ed Debevic's in Chicago.

1. She has been incredibly supportive. From the moment that I told her that we were expecting quintuplets, my mom has been there for me. She provided emotional support during the ups and downs of the pregnancy and she spent a large chunk of her summer taking care of Riley and Kaiya while I was on bedrest (in the middle of trying to sell her house and put on a huge family reunion).

My mom and I the day before delivery.

Since the babies were born, she has come nearly every month for 10-14 days at a time to help take care of the babies. She has sacrificed a lot in her own life to be there for me, and I am so grateful for her. I could not have asked for a better mother---she is the BEST!!!

9 Months Old!

Kyndall, Rustin, Kaydence, Ryder and Kassidy

This week the babies turned 9 months old! At our church, kids can go to the nursery during Sunday School when they are 18 months old, so we are half-way to nursery age! I can't believe they will all be one in three months. Here is an update on each of the kids:

Name: Kassidy aka "Spike"
Age: 9 months
Weight: 16 lbs 8 oz
Height: 27 inches
Accomplishments: scoots on tummy, finally eating most baby foods
Known Weaknesses: strong dislike of most vegetables, big-time "Momma's Girl"
Superpowers: heightened sense of "stranger danger", super-grasp cling
Health prognosis: recently diagnosed with Grade 2 urinary reflux (where the urine refluxes back up the ureters to the kidneys), will hopefully go away on its own in 6-9 months

Name: Kaydence aka "Curl"
Age: 9 months
Weight: 15 lbs 3 oz
Height: 25.5 inches
Accomplishments: First tooth (now she has two!)
Superpowers: Super-smile and infectious laugh, turbo-speed "army" crawl

Name: Rustin aka "Red"
Age: 9 months
Weight: 17 lbs
Height: 26.25 inches
Accomplishments: First and fastest crawler, pulls up to standing on furniture
Known Weaknesses: "Grass is greener" complex--always wants someone else's toy
Superpowers: "Bulldozer" crawl--he lets nothing get in his way
Health prognosis: Eczema, super-sensitive skin (the sacrifice you have to make for having great red hair!)

Name: Kyndall aka "Peanut"
Age: 9 months
Weight: 12 lbs 9 oz
Height: 25.75 inches
Accomplishments: Second to crawl on hands and knees, finally eating baby foods without force
Known Weaknesses: because of her small size, many children (most notably my own) confuse her with a baby doll

Health prognosis: Needs to gain more weight

Name: Ryder aka "Ladies Man"
Age: 9 months
Weight: 16 lb 11 oz

A Day in the Life...

A while back someone asked what a “typical” day was like at our house. This is generally how the days go at our house. It is a little bit idealistic, since there always seems to be at least one baby who throws things off. I am hoping that one day in the near future they really will all take their morning and afternoon naps together at the same time!

6:00 am:

The babies start getting up. As soon as they get up, they get a bottle.

6:05 am:

Wake Riley up and start getting him ready for school

6:30 am:

Breakfast for the kids, make lunches, make sure backpacks are ready, etc.

6:50 am:

Family scripture study and family prayer

7:00 am:

Riley leaves for the bus stop, Jayson leaves for work

7:10 am:

Baby bath time! It usually takes about 40 minutes to bathe all the babies. We do it “assembly line” style.

7:50 am:

Playtime! The babies LOVE jumping.

8:30 – 9:00 am:

The babies go down for their morning nap. Our naptime routine is:
1) Change diaper
2) Read story in rocking chair
3) Wrap in blanket
4) Cuddle briefly
5) Lay in bed and say goodnight!

8:45 am:

Kaiya leaves for preschool

Around 9:30 – 10:00 am:

The babies wake up from their nap and get another bottle

10:00 am:

Play time again! We have two jumpers (they liked the jungle jumperoo so much we had to find another jumperoo on Craigslist) and they sometimes "compete" with each other to see who can get the highest. Ryder usually wins.

12:00 pm:

Solid Foods Lunch—usually a delectable combination of cereal, fruit and veggies

Around 12:30 – 1:30 pm:

The babies go down for their afternoon nap.

2:00 pm:

Kaiya comes home from preschool

Around 2:30 – 3:00 pm:

The babies wake up from their afternoon nap and get another bottle. Everything from how much the babies eat to what kind of diapers they have, which medications they take and how much they weigh is recorded on charts.

3:00 pm:

Play time again!

Rustin is so close to really being able to crawl. He gets on his hands and knees and rocks and lurches forward. Tonight he took about two "crawl steps" before falling on his face.

Despite the fact that Kyndall is the only one that can't quite sit up on her own, she is also really close to being able to crawl. Her favorite thing to do is get into a "push-up" position.

3:05 pm:

Riley comes home from school

3:10 pm:

Snack for the older kids

3:30 pm:

Start bugging Riley about his homework

4:30 pm:

Afternoon walk—this is my favorite part of the day! I get to get out of the house and usually all five babies are happy without me holding any of them!

5:15 pm:

Solid Foods Dinner for the babies. The menu is similar to lunch. Ryder, Rustin and Kaydence are all really good eaters. Kassidy and Kyndall do not like solid foods yet, but within the last week have made some great improvements. In the beginning, Kyndall couldn't even look at a spoon without breaking into tears.

5:45 pm:

Jayson gets home from work

6:00 pm:

Dinner for the rest of the family

6:45 pm:

Dancing time—it has become part of our nightly ritual to turn on fun music and dance for the babies. Riley and Kaiya love dancing and the babies love to watch. We were hooked on the soundtrack for “Hairspray” for a couple of months, but now we have broadened our selection to include other songs

7:00 pm:

Baby Bedtime Routine:

(lights are dimmed and soft classical music plays in the background)

1) Bottle
2) “Nakey” time
3) Change diaper
4) Lotion massage with the lavender lotion
5) Vicks Babyrub for the chest
6) Put on jammies
7) Wrap in blanket
8) Cuddle briefly
9) Lay in bed and say goodnight!

7:30 pm:

Put Riley and Kaiya to bed

8:00 pm:

We made it through another day! All the kids are asleep!!!! Time to clean up and get everything else done!

A little sidenote...

After months of chewing on everything in sight and producing drool by the gallon, we finally have a tooth! Kaydence is the first, and so far only, one of the bunch to get a tooth. We hope that the other babies will soon follow suit so we can feel justified in blaming every little fever and cranky afternoon on "teething".

PS

I apologize for not posting in a while. For the past month and a half we have had at least one baby sick at all times, so we have been operating mostly in "survival mode". On the plus side, I am becoming extremely proficient with saline drops and a bulb syringe!

Easter and Ear Infections

Kyndall, Rustin, Kaydence, Ryder and Kassidy

Our luck finally ran out and the little virus that has been going around made it to our house and decided to stay a while. It started with Kyndall and Rustin, and then moved on to Ryder, Kaydence and Kassidy. For some, it was a cold (coughing, sneezing, runny nose, low-grade fever, and general unhappiness), but for Kyndall, Ryder and Kaydence, it blossomed into ear infections. This of course meant many sleepless nights and lots of rule breaking when it came to naps and bedtime routines. Fortunately, I think the worst is behind us and hopefully everyone will be back to full health within a few days. It will probably take a little longer than that to re-train everyone on “The Rules” and get back to sleeping (mostly) through the night.

With all the antibiotics and medications to give out around here, I have learned some tricks for getting babies to take their medicine. Contrary to popular belief, a spoonful of sugar does not help the medicine go down, at least not for my babies! Despite the yummy orange creamsicle flavor, no one wanted to take it without a fight. Here are some of the tricks that worked for me:

1—Measure out the medicine and squirt it into a bottle nipple. Have the baby suck the medicine out of the nipple. If the baby won’t take it at first, start with a pacifier and then use the bait and switch method to get them to suck on the medicine nipple. For thicker medications, a nipple with a cut in the top may be necessary. This trick works like a charm for Kyndall. Everything else we have tried with her usually results in the medicine (and anything eaten in the last couple of hours) being thrown up all over everything in a three feet radius.

2—Pinch the baby’s cheeks together, squirt the medicine into the side of the cheek and don’t let go until they swallow. With their cheeks pinched, it is harder for the baby to spit the medicine back out. Of course this method is no fun for either baby or parent, since it makes the baby pretty mad, but it does get the medicine down. One other trick when using this method is to blow on the baby’s face after putting the medicine in their mouth---this causes the baby to swallow.

3—Mix the medicine with a little bit of rice cereal and spoon it in. Try this only when the baby is hungry, and only if the baby actually likes eating cereal normally. (Hence this method does NOT work for Kyndall at our house, but works well with Kaydence and Ryder). It may be necessary to alternate bites of medicated cereal with something the baby loves like bananas or applesauce.

4—Stick a finger in the side of the baby’s mouth, squirt the medicine in and wait for the baby to swallow before removing the finger. With the finger in there, the baby can’t push the medicine back out with their tongue. I haven’t actually tried this one, but a friend that was over tonight suggested claims it works well, and it sounded good to me J

I would love to hear any tricks that other people have used, so please share them in a comment!

With all the sleep depravity going on around here, I think I have started to act a little loopy. Someone called the other day and said, “Good Morning!” To which I responded, “Good, how are you?” Oops. Then a couple of nights ago we were in the middle of the bedtime routine when someone knocked on the door to tell us that my keys, complete with a house key, were dangling from our mailbox. I hadn’t even tried to get the mail that day, so they had actually been sitting there for over 24 hours. Double oops! Fortunately no psycho baby kidnappers found the keys in that time.

I think my friends took pity on me and a couple of them came and stayed overnight to help out. My friend’s husband even came over to help one night. Wow! I don’t know many men who would be willing to do that! I definitely consider myself blessed to have such wonderful friends!

Another blessing---Target Pharmacy has color coded medicine bottles in all my colors (except pink, but red was pretty close). What a lifesaver for me. Hurray for Target!

Today was Easter and we decided to take the babies to church with us. We have only been to church two other times with the babies (for their blessings and for Christmas). Since January, our church meeting time has been at 9:00 am, so getting out the door was quite a challenge! Jayson was in Denver for his sister’s wedding, so it was my mom and I getting everyone ready with a little help from our friend, Virginia. Considering we had to get five babies, two older kids, ourselves and four diaper bags ready and still have time for an Easter egg hunt before we left, I think we did pretty well being only seven minutes late. Once we got to church, there were lots of willing hands ready to help with the babies, so it was actually quite pleasant! We may even try it all again next week (minus the Easter Egg hunt…)

Big Sister Kaiya Turns Five!

This week was Kaiya’s fifth birthday. We celebrated with a small family party, but Kaiya couldn’t have been more excited. She tells everyone who walks through our door that she is now 5, and is constantly saying things like, “Today is the first time I [go to church, eat pizza, etc.] when I am five!” Because of her birthday, I decided to focus this post on Kaiya.
Kaiya and her princess birthday cake.
Kaiya is such a fun person to have in our family. She is all girl. She loves dressing up, dancing, make-up, playing with dolls and wearing pink. She is also very smart---sometimes a little too smart! Even though she is nearly three years younger than Riley, she doesn’t let that stop her from trying to do (or out-do) everything that Riley does.

Fun Facts about Kaiya

Favorite color: pink, purple and rainbow
Favorite food: chicken bundles
Most hated food: tomatoes
Favorite treat: chocolate ice cream
Favorite place to visit: Disney world
Favorite princess: Belle
Favorite things to do: help with the babies, play dress-up
Favorite restaurant: McDonald’s
Funny thing about Kaiya: She hums when she is eating something she likes.

Favorite Kaiya Quotes:

Riley: “Mom Kaiya hit me!”
Kaiya: “It was an accident!”
Riley: “Mom, what does an accident mean?”
Kaiya: “I know, I know, an accident means that you don’t go to time out, on purpose means you do go to time out.”

Kaiya: “Where does Grandma Rappleye live?”
Mom: “She lives in Utah.”
Kaiya: “Me-tah?"

Just for fun, I thought I would take a poll to see which baby people think looks the most like Kaiya. You can cast your vote in the poll on the right.

Progress Report

The babies had their six month doctor visit a little over a week ago. It was a little late because we wanted to get the RSV vaccination shots at the same time, and we had a little trouble getting the prescription filled on time. There are two pediatricians in the practice that we go to, so doctor's visits usually go pretty smooth, and surprisingly fast considering all the babies we bring! This time I took a total of four adults (including myself) to the appointment. The girls went into one room, and the boys went into another. The doctors said that the babies are all doing GREAT!! They are amazed at how healthy they are and at how wonderfully they are progressing. Developmentally, they are all right on track---doing things that full-term babies of the same age are doing. Growth-wise they are catching up as well.

Here are every one's individual stats at 6 1/2 months:

Kassidy

Height: 26 inches (25th-50th percentile)

Weight: 14 lb 10 oz (10th-25th perentile)

Kaydence

Height: 25.25 inches (10th-25th percentile)

Weight: 14 lb 1 oz (5th-10th percentile)

Rustin

Height: 25.25 inches (3rd-5th percentile)

Weight 15 lb 9 oz (10th-25th percentile)

Kyndall

Height: 25.25 inches (10th-25th percentile)

Weight: 11 lb 5 oz (less than 3rd percentile)

Ryder

Height: 25.75 inches (10th-25th percentile)

Weight: 15 lb 4 oz (5th-10th percentile)

Somebody suggested that I put my data analysis skills to work and create a graph of the babies weights from birth. It is probably hard to read this small, but you can kind of get an idea of how they are growing.

All seven Wilkinson Kids---Aren't they adorable???
(Ryder, Kaydence, Kaiya, Kyndall, Riley, Kassidy, Rustin)

Riley is "Knight of the Week" at school, which means that he gets to take the class pet (a stuffed giraffe named Julie) home for the weekend. (Clockwise from the top: Kaiya, Kassidy, Rustin, Kaydence, Ryder, Kyndall, Riley and Julie Giraffe)

Riley with his award for the Reflections contest. He made it to the Area level, where he received an Award of Merit for his video entry. Way to go Riley! (FYI--Riley's full name is Jayson Riley Wilkinson---hence the "Jayson" on the certificate)
