The Beanie Beds

I have had several people ask me about the beanie beds mentioned in my last post. They are made by a woman named Elva. She has been making them for about 12 years. She doesn't have a web site, but her e-mail is elval@cox.net. The beds are $22 plus shipping which is about $6. She has them on hand and can mail them any time.

My babies used them for about the first four months, and I loved them. Below are a couple of pictures of them. The first picture was taken during a photo shoot for an insurance magazine, so it doesn't really show how we actually used the beds, but you can get an idea of what they look like. The second picture is of babies actually sleeping with the beds. The beds are washable, but I usually put a blanket over the beanie bed so that I didn't have to wash them very often.

HI!! I'm sure you get this all the time but I've really enjoyed looking at your blog. I saw your picture and article in the BYU alumni magazine and then saw your name on a multiples blog list. I've got triplets - two boys and a girl that are about the same age. Adding two more kids to the mix seems to get you SO much more attention. We live in a small community and so we get to lay low and live our little lives. Your blog is very informative and I look forward to reading more. Feel free to check out our blog(although it's not as cute as yours): kcbenryalynorton.blogspot.com

Not to be alarmist or anything but those beanie beds are very similar to the bean bag beds I had with my firstborn. I loved it but they were removed from the market after several babies died from suffocation when they were on them. Used properly, they are wonderful! Those babies got their faces buried in the bag.

I am a nurse on the postpartum unit of our local hospital and right on our discharge instructions it says to have the babies sleep on a firm surface and not to have them on a beanbag chair...I am wondering if these beanbag beds are considered safe?
I love to read about your family and check your blogs almost everyday!

I love the 6 month pictures and the new blog layout. I wish I would have had some of those beds for my rugrats :) You are amazing, your children are beautiful. Don't know if you are aware or not, but we traveled to Dr. Elliott as well and keep up with your kiddos. Thanks for updating us.

Again, not to be an alarmist either, however, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends ALL infants sleep on flat and firm mattresses without any blankets (except for those infants with medical exceptions who are on monitors). Pacifiers should be offered to promote lighter sleep states, as well. These are SIDS prevention guidelines. These beds are not recommended by the AAP, so I would be cautious promoting them. If one claims it is for use to prevent flattening of the heads (plagiocephaly), please consider tummy time at least 2 times per day when the infant is awake/alert and change head/feet positions in the bed often (which I know you do). I am not trying to be critical of your parenting either. I think you do an AMAZING job with your babies. However, it seems that someone was ALWAYS around and awake with your babies during the months they used them at night. This is not the case when someone has a single baby. I could easily see a baby rolling off and becoming entrapped in the bean bag material. So please, don't consider this critical, you do a great job! As a pediatric medical professional, I am compelled to share to promote safety for all children. God bless you and your family!! Jennifer

Those six month pictures are absolutely adorable. It's truly a miracle to see how strong and healthy they all are. I'm sure they keep you hopping but I also bet you count your blessings every single day!

If you or someone close to you is expecting and you’re planning on purchasing cribs or baby changing table you’ll want to start shopping several months before the due date. Currently, there are many beautiful, traditional style wooden cribs on the market. These baby cribs are sturdy and functional and can give your nursery a real sense of old-world charm. Most are built to accommodate adjustable mattress heights, have safety hardware and hand-and-knee releases. Some models also incorporate the addition of a teething rail on the drop-down sides and are also available in convertible styles. A convertible crib will grow with your child. When your child reaches toddler age, you can convert the crib into their first ‘real’ bed! That’s a great money-saving tip. Whichever crib design you choose, from traditional to contemporary, round, convertible or portable, you should be satisfied in knowing that you’ve chosen a safe, cozy retreat for your baby to dream their sweet, little dreams.

I know I am a year late reading this, but I was searching everywhere for Elva's website and saw the link to your page! I think it's great that you have quints!!!!! I do hand casting (www.firstimpressionshandcasts.com) if you ever want to have their hands casted, I will give you a great deal! Quints are the best!!!!
