Budding Artist or Troublemaker?

WARNING: This post is rated GP (for gratuitous poop) and may not be suitable for all audiences.

Rustin is not always the best napper. At least 1 or 2 days a week, I can hear him playing in his crib instead of sleeping. This particular day, I heard him driving his cars on the wall and singing songs to himself, but it didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary. It was about 2:45 pm when I finally went to get him out of his crib. I was expecting a visit from the people working on the HEB commercial at 3:00 pm. When I opened the door, this is what I found:

Rustin, his clothes, the crib, the walls, everything within striking distance, was covered in POOP! Rustin was still fully clothed, so apparently he just reached into his diaper to get to it. I was horrified---especially since I knew the commercial people would be there in less than 15 minutes!

I quickly took Rustin out of his crib and ran him down to my shower. I stripped him down and hosed him off. He had obviously been playing in the poop for quite some time, as it was caked and dried all over his fingers.

Once I got Rustin cleaned up, I started on the crib and room.

Toy cars + Poop + White walls = Big Mess!

No surface left untouched

Rustin looks quite pleased with his "artwork".

If Riley or Kaiya had done this when they were the same age, I am pretty sure I would have cried, or yelled, or both during the entire clean-up process. With Rustin, my first thought was "Oh, no! I think I am going to be sick! This is so DISGUSTING!!!", but my SECOND thought was, "This is going to make a great post for the blog!" So, I really have to thank all of you loyal blog readers for motivating me to write---you helped me get through a messy situation tear-free and with a smile on my face (well as much of a smile as you can have when you are plugging your nose).

Thankfully, the commercial people called to say they were running late, and I managed to get it all cleaned and disinfected by the time they arrived! Fortunately, Rustin has not done this again since, but I wouldn't be surprised if he or one of the others decided to paint with poop again in the future.

Just so you know, if that happens on "Mother's day out" I will be calling you home to clean it up! :) That's pretty gross and a little funny! If one of my kids had done that bb (before blog) I never would have thought to take pictures as I would have been too mad! :) Yay for blogs!

Yes it is a good thing that God gave us a sense of humour but sometimes I wonder why we still have a sense of smell!! Haha. I was really hoping when I first saw that photo a couple weeks ago that it wasn't poop...oh Rustin. I can't say that I'm surprised, I have 2 little brothers who have red hair and well...I had similar experiences babysitting them when we were growing up!

Glad to hear that you managed to keep your cool. You're Super Mom!

I'm finding myself mellowing out as a parent as time goes on. However, I still probably would have cried with this kind of mess!

haha! So sorry this happened. It happened at my house too. My nieces little guy who is only a little older that my youngest son.. well they get together and make messes and generally cause trouble. What one doesn't think of the other will, and they wholeheartedly support one another. Once there were icky muddy looking smudges that had obviously been done by small fingers and just their height. I asked Noah(because Isaiah still couldn't talk yet!) "what IS that?" He said, "it might be poop" Isaid, " oh really? who might have done it?" He said, "maybe me and Isaiah did it." yeah, maybe. I gave them the nontoxic cleaner and a couple of old cleaning rags and said, "well, MAYBE you two need to clean it up! and NEVER put poop on wals or anything again!" Now they are 6 and thank heavens past THAT stage! Good luck to you in yours!

We have a child who did the same thing. It must be all part of learning how to be a person. You know, that would have made a great Lysol commercial. Well, maybe not.

Oh my oh my. My youngest son use to do this often, and it was always after nap time. We got to where we would run into his room and get him up the second we heard that he was awake. But you have FIVE the same age... Oh dear. Keep us posted on this one.

Yuck! I could not even think about clearing that up! When my toddler had a poo accident in his pants, I threw them out!

Glad you could do it with a smile. This blogging stuff is really good for certain situations. x

I can smell this post all the way to Ole Virginny.

These types of events always seem to happen when another important event is about to take place. Grabbing the camera was a good choice, such level headed thinking on your part. Throwing him in the shower even better. What a clean up, the smell doesn't go away for days.

Poop painting I'm sure indicates a creative curious mind and who knows it even might be genetic.

I was old enough to remember my own poop painting experience, my mother was not happy and did not take a picture of me. She also tied me to my crib, a criminal offense now days but a sanity defense for her back in the day of my toddlerhood. I was a troublemaker and according to Ken I still am but I have given up poop painting for more delightfully smelling expressions of creativity.

Rustin is so cute, even when covered in poo.
Rachelle you continue to amaze us all with your good humor and ability to weather some very difficult mothering moments.

my twins have done that a few times though I've never taken pictures. Glad you could smile through it!

Before blogging I would have yelled and cried about it too. Now I grab the camera to document the mess and then start cleaning up. Thank goodness for blogging!

I have triplets and one of them makes this almost a daily event at our house...she can get into anything that we put on her to stop her from doing this. Must say the more often it happens the faster you get at the clean up.

Omigosh, I don't know what I will do if any of my kids do this. My husband is such a germophobe that I bet he would make us move, HA! Now that you've cleaned up the mess, got any tips for those of us who have yet to encounter this phenomenon?

That is too funny. Congrats on the commercial. I bet that was an interesting experience. I can't wait to see the finished product. Are you guys still planning a trip to Denver at the end of the summer? I would love to get our families together!

hi! so i don't know if you know the Hepworths, in Austin. Not sure what ward they are in, but my mother in law came and helped you out. She was telling us all about you guys. THen I found out I was having twins. (we now have 4 kids 3 and under b/c of our newborn twins) :) so I was looking for blogs with moms of multiples and i came across yours. i love your blog. i am the oldest of 6 kids...me, triplets, and twins. so we didn't have 5 all at once like you, but i grew up taking care of my 5 siblings who were close in age, while i was much older. anyway, my blog is currently private but you are more than welcome to come visit it. send me an email at kristinehepworth@yahoo.com and i'll give you an invite. i know you are obviously busy :) so whenever you get the chance :)

Wow. It's kinda scary to see what may be in store for my near future. I would have just painted over it :/ Jk. Saw you on tv since the last time we talked, very nice. Best wishes.

We've been through the same thing. Our oldest child did it (a couple of times, unfortunately) when he was about two. We called him Poop-caso.

Hope it doesn't happen again!
